Jf~li`~[ Council Agenda Item MEETING DATE: May 28, 2008 AGENDA ITEM: Capital Equipment Request-Salt Sand Shed SUBMITTED BY: Terry Thene, Public Works Director BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: Approved the issuance of Equipment Certificate to purchase asalt/sand storage shed to be located on the Maintenance Facility site. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City has been discussing the need to construct a new storage facility for salt/sand. The City currently uses and existing shelter down by the wastewater plant to store some material and the City also rents space from Gene Lange for the excess. The current shelter does not meet the standards for storing salt/sand so regardless the City would have to make changes and the facility could not be modified to meet the new standards. When the staff looked at the different property owned by the City, it made sense to locate the salt/sand shed near the equipment for loading and operation. The maintenance shop on Elm Street was the only logical site. Therefore, the City Engineer was requested to review the site to assure that not only could the salt/sand shed be placed on the site, but the existing shop could be expanded and the water tower could be located. All this has been accomplished and the staff is requesting to move forward. At the May 21 Council meeting, the cost of facility was discussed and the increasing price of steel. The steel in the facility is the support structure and we will have a cost on the steel and the impact of the new price. BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: ATTACHMENTS: REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION: requested.
