Jc~krft Council Agenda Item I ~~ MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM: SUBMITTED BY: June 5, 2008 Firefighter Hire Administrator BOARDjCOMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: The Fire Board has recommended the hiring of the candidates listed below and the establishment of the eligibility list as identified below. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The City Council has previously authorized the Fire Board to begin the hiring process to fill the current vacancies on the St. Joseph Fire Department due to recent retirements. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Fire Department currently has three vacancies on the department as a result of retirees. The Department is allowed to have a membership of up to 30 members. The City received a great response to the ad for membership and received 13 applications. The Fire Department Investigating Committee rates all the applications and conducts the screening process. When they are finished they provide the Fire Board with a ranking list requesting to hire the top candidates. Since we have a number of candidates that are qualified and passed the screening the Fire Board is requesting to establish an eligibility list so the City does not have to go through the same process again in 12 months. BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: ATTACHMENTS: REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION: -Accept the recommendation of the Fire Board hiring the following firefighters: Brent Terwey, Eric Gillitzer, Daryl Schoemer and establishing an eligibility list for future fire department hires that will be maintained for a period of 12 months. They are as follows: Keith Louwagie, Steven Luitgens, Greg Koutojpas.
