Capital Purchase -Requested Action: Approve the purchase of the
Manhole cover lift, spool gun, and salt sander replacement.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Previously, the Council has budgeted for the following:
1. Manhole cover lift: This lift would be utilized for the lifting of manhole covers. This operates
with a leverage principle and should eliminate the need to lift covers with the possibility of
injury to the operator's backs. This tool is recommended by the League of MN Cities for injury
prevention.
2. Spool Gun: The spool gun would attach to the current welder at the City's Public Works Building.
This would allow City Staff to repair aluminum in house as repairs are currently needed on the
aluminum grates on the screens at the main lift station. Currently these repairs are performed at
welding shops at a rate of $65/hour with an hour minimum charge.
3. Salt Sander: The replacement of one sander this year should be completed. The current augers
on the sanders are worn down from the years of use. The salty/sandy environment has eaten
the metal on these sanders to a dilapidated state of repair. The new sanders would be stainless
steel with a poly spinner. This should give the City good years of service. May need to increase
from $5,000 to $5,500 depending on current adaption to the new sander.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: Manhole cover lift $2,400
Spool Gun $1,000
Salt Sander Replacement $5,500
