JOSEPH PARKS COMMISSION MEETING September 23, 1980 The St. Joseph Park Commission was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chairman Ray Brandenburger with the following members in attendance: Dick Taufen, Dave Keller, Jerrie Rennie, Bill Lorentz, and Mayor Hugo Weyrens. The minutes of the August 26th meeting were read and approved. A letter from the Sisters of St. Benedict was read giving approval to use a small portion of their property for the nature trail access to Millstream Park. Bill Lorentz reported that the dredging should cost less than the estimate. If this is the case, it was suggested that this money could be used to purchase 30 - 50 posts for use in any park according to need. Mayor Weyrens reported that a letter was sent to Mr. Barker to remove the basketball set-up in Hollow Park. Discussion conerning the Spring Fling and Octoberfest held in Centennial Park followed. Dick Taufen stated that it takes most of the summer to recover from the grass, trees, and ground damage from one and then the next is held. Discussion followed on recommending these events be held in another area. A motion concerning this was not made at this time. The rental of the park shelter was discussed. It was noted that there is cost involment not only in the clean-up, but also regular maintenance costs. A motion was made by Dick Taufen, seconded by Bill Lorentz, and passed unanimously, that the Park Commission recommend to the Council to approve a rental fee of $25.00 for outside groups and $15.00 for local groups. Bill Lorentz proposed a permanent regulation size volleyball court to be located approximately halfway between the Millstone and the park shelter in Millstream Park. After discussion, a motion was made by Bill Lorentz, seconded by Dick Taufen, that the City Council be requested to approve an expenditure up to $250 for this purpose. Motion passed. A detailed review of the proposed City Parks Ordinance followed. A motion was made by Dick Taufen, seconded by Bill Lorentz, to turn over the proposed ordinance to the City Council and Attorney for their review and approval. Any changes would come back to the Park Commission before final adoption. Mayor Weyrens said that the Park Commission should be advertised and posted, perhaps the best place being in the Hitching Post. Mayor Weyrens will ask the City Council to review the possibility that all city meetings, including the Park Commission, be listed in the Hitching Post. A motion to adjourn was made by Dave Keller and seconded by Jerry Rennie. Dave Keller Acting Secretary
