HomeMy WebLinkAbout1984 [04] Apr 23ST. JOSEPH PARKS COMMISSION MEETING April 23, 1984 The regular meeting of the St. Joseph Parks Commission was held in City Hall at 7:00 p.m. on April 23. Members present were: Blanchette, Braun, Gretsch, Henry, Klein, Manderfeld, and Pfannenstein. No Treasurer's reprot available. Blanchette and Braun to interview six students from St. Benedict's for summer employment in the parks under the Student Financial Aid Program. Interviews to take place Thursday evening at St. Ben's. It was mentioned the barrier at Fifth Avenue Northwest and Hollow Park is set too high. Children drive under it with their bikes. It was felt the barrier should be lowered in order to prevent accidents. Manderfeld stated he could get seedlings if there was a need for more trees in the parks. This could be worked out with the Girl Scouts and Arbor Day recognition. The City Council has approved cement for the basketball hoops that are to be installed in three of the parks. The Council will not approve money for the hoops and backboards until exact cost is available. The Board voted to buy the back- boards and hoops at Mills Fleet Farr.. Money was approved for the cement repair work to be done on the Lions shelter. However, the Lions chuse tc do the repair work themselves. A mileage fee of $80.00 was approved by the City Council for speakers or students working on park improvement plans. The University of Minnesota offers a prograirl (Center for Community Studies) which avails students to a community that wishes help in planning park development, downtown renewal or any other project that requires "professional" help in design- ing. The possibility of getting such help was discussed by the Board. Blanchette, Henry, and Manderfeld to fill out preliminary forms to iriplement this actior-. Chuc}: Laoc]cen, Director of the Stearns County Park Systems showed slides on the public parks in the area. He offered suggestions on applying for a grant; also what grants would be available.
