Members present were: Donna Blanchette, Nel Pfannenstein, Joe Braun, Vince Manderfeld, Jo Loscheider, Claudette Klein. . The Youth Hockey Association joined us at this meeting. The Hockey Assn. would like the City Attorney to speak with District 742 to find out just how secure the current enclosed lease really is. For example, how likely is it that District 742 will close or alter Kennedy Schools use so that the Hockey Assn. would be forced to vacate? The Hockey Assn. does not have any written explanation on insurance and liability. They would like a letter clarifying this point. The current hockey rinks are in a very poor state. The Hockey Assn. has been spending a large share of their funds to repair the current rinks. They feel it would be best to build one entirely new rink, and to demolish the two present rinks. The Hockey Assn. has a bid of about $2,500.00 for materials for the new rink. The Assn. cannot afford to pay for the new rink. They are asking the City of St. Joseph and also St. Joseph Township to pay for the necessary materials. They are also asking for City Maintenance workers to asemble the rink as they did not have adequate volunteers for this. The feeling from the Hockey Assn. is that the rink is a piece of equipment that is used by their skaters and also by any other skater that wants to use the ice. They have tried to maintain the rink (meaning lumber, etc.) but the cost is too much. They feel their money could be spent much better on direct items for the kids (i.e. equipment for kids who can't afford it, goals, etc.). The Hockey Assn. felt s *~uould be quite helpful if Warming House Attendants would be required (in their job description) to clean off the ice, when necessary.
