Dear Ms. Weyrens,

The purpose of this letter is to follow up on our request for support from the City of St. Joseph for
calendar year 2009.
The economic recession that currently occupies our thoughts and energy offers a sober reminder of the
Initiative Foundation's genesis. Our organization was born amid economic turmoil of the 1980's to
provide central Minnesotans a "hand up" to making their home towns healthier, more sustainable places
to live, work, and grow. Since 1986 we have not wavered from this path, putting over $53.5 million to
work in our 14-county region in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations, and business financing
loans to help create or retain living-wage jobs. The Foundation also continues to provide leadership
training and support to citizens who wish to engage in the important, proactive work of improving the
quality of life in and around the place they call "home." (To date we've trained nearly 4,400 citizens in
one or more of our signature capacity-building programs.) For more than 23 years the Initiative
Foundation has been your resource for community and economic development ...and we're still here.
Times of diminished resources sharpen our focus and bring about studied investment choices. We
respectfully ask that you consider making an investment in your community and its citizens through a gift
to support the Foundation's mission and work. Our request for 2009 was $1500. If this amount or
another amount has been approved, please consider this letter a request for payment.
Please know that your gift does directly impact your home town, your neighbors, and your friends!
Especially in these difficult times, THANK YOU for thoughtfully considering a financial investment in
the Initiative Foundation's community development and economic development programs and services.
Sincerely,
rt Hanson
Vice President for Donor Service

PS: The Initiative Foundation will be sending a
2010 Budget Request to the City by mid-June 2009.
