Council Agenda Item 5
MEETING DATE: May 21, 2009
AGENDA ITEM: St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce -Wobegon
Concessions
SUBMITTED BY: Administration
BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce
is requesting authorization to sell concessions at the Wobegon Welcoming Center on weekends.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The Council accepted the donations of the Chamber for the construction
of the Wobegon Facility. While the City received a DNR Grant, the Chamber spearheaded the project
and raised the necessary funds.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Shortly after the Wobegon Building was opened, a vending machine
appeared at the Wobegon Welcoming Center and it was placed by a private individual. It was assumed
that the money was forwarded to the Chamber, but it was not. A private individual profited from the
machine. The City requested that the machine be removed and was shortly thereafter. The Chamber
uses the facility for meetings from time to time and is not charged as they were the contractors.
The St. Joseph Chamber is working on visibility and creating a presence. At the recent Chamber meeting
they discussed selling concessions on weekends and using the funds as a fund raiser.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: No direct impact to the City; however, the Chamber has
donated may items to the City and the vending would allow for fund raising.
ATTACHMENTS: St. Joseph Chamber Minutes
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION: Accept the proposal of the St. Joseph Chamber authorizing the
Chamber to sell concessions at the Wobegon Welcoming Center.

May Chamber Executive Board Meeting Minutes

The Local Blend
In attendance: Jean Dotzler, Mike McDonald, Sister Miriam Ardolf, Cory Ehlert and
Alison Brown Bell
Do we want to sponsor a team at the Central MN Federal Credit Union golf
tournament? The chamber could sponsor $15 of the $35 entry fee. We could sponsor 2
teams and it would cost $120 for eight players. It is being held in Paynesville.
Jean will try to get ahold of Chad and Matt to talk about sponsoring a golf tournament
instead of doing the Riverbats night.
Jane will be updating the website next week. We'll send out an email to have everyone
check it when she's done to make sure everything is correct.
Let's rejuvenate the membership committee. Should we prorate the fee for new
members who join now? Committee member will be sensitive to this issue when
approaching potentials -perhaps $50 after June 1 -letting them know they'll be
getting billed again in January.
Cory made a motion to pay the Fire Department for the $1000 we committed to the
Christmas Decorations. Seconded by Sister Miriam. Motion passed.
Lake Wobegon Trail -can we have a staff out at the building to sell soft drinks and ice
cream bars? Cory will check with the city and Bernick's regarding product, etc. Maybe
we can get a vending machine and a chest freezer too. We could put tables up to do a
little bistro inside.
Next meeting is Bring a friend month. The chamber will pay for lunch for your friend
(non-member guest). Please R.S.V.P. So we know how many will attend. New
sponsorship program. Whoever sponsors the lunch pays the chamber $100. They
collect the money for the lunch and pay for the lunch.
Jeff Engholm from The Local Blend is still checking on a billboard or signage on the
freeway and off highway 75.
Respectfully submitted,
Alison Brown Bell
