BACKGROUND INFORMATION: New members to the SJFD need to take and pass First Responder,
Firefighter 1, and have a Class B license with tanker endorsement within 2 years of their hire date
before they can be accepted onto the department. Allowing new members to take extra classes before
they are completed with the mandatory classes gives them less time to get done what they have to get
done. It also can be a cost factor in that if the new members do not get there class done and do not get
accepted to the fire department and decide to leave the department may be out the money

REQUESTED ACTION: The fire chief would like to make it mandatory that all new members complete all
three mandatory classes and be accepted to the Fire Department before they would be allowed to get
any advanced training. Not sure if we need to make changes to the application or if this could be left to
the Fire Chief.
