FIRE DEPT.
MEETING DATE: February 101h 2010
AGENDA ITEM: Christmas Lights
Fire Board Agenda Item S — E
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The St. Joseph Fire Department has been putting up the Christmas Lights
on the City streets for 20+ years. It is getting harder and harder to get Firefighters to help put them up
and take them down. We also have to use the Cities loader and some up there pickup trucks to get the
job done, along with some of the Firefighters personal trucks and or trailers. It takes us a combined
total (up and down) of about 5 – 6 hours a year to check the lights, put them up and take down and
store them. In the past, the City only had 3 employees on the Maintance staff and all three of them
were on the Fire Department. So those 3 and the rest of the Fire Department would put up the lights.
Now the City has 8 -9 employees on the Maintance staff and works 7 -days a week.
BUDGET /FISCAL IMPACT: $800.00 to $1200.00
ATTACHMENTS: None
REQUESTED ACTION: Would like to talk about this with the Fire Board. Seeing how the city has grown
and the maintance Dept. has also grown, is it time to maybe save Fire Department some money and
have the maintance dept. take over ? ??
