SUBMITTED BY:
Administration
BOARD /COMMISSION /COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: The Fire Board met on February 10,
2010 and received information that the St. Joseph Volunteer Fire Department was successful in securing
a grant from MN Training in the amount of $ 4,000. The training will cover the Fire Department cost for
defensive training which is scheduled for April. This is a 100% grant without a match.
The Fire Board unanimously recommended the Council authorize the Fire Department to apply for a
matching grant from the DNR to replace the 6 wheeler in the Fire Department.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The Council previously authorized the Fire Department to make
applications for the grant. Any grants awarded, pursuant to MN Statute must be approved by City
Council who receives a recommendation from the Fire Board.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Fire Department, like all departments of the City, is required to
prepare a five year capital improvement plan. The Plan identifies equipment that is needed in the
future. The Fire Department has identified the need to replace the 6`h wheeler in the future and have
set aside $ 10,000 towards that purchase. It is estimated that the replacement cost of the 6 wheeler is $
15,000. The grant from the DNR is a 50/50 matching grant with a maximum contribution of $ 5,000.
The Fire Chief identified this piece of equipment as one that is in need of replacement and the Fire
Board felt that if application is made this year and not funded, it could be resubmitted one more time
before the purchase would be needed.
BUDGET /FISCAL IMPACT: Funding assistance in the amount of $ 5,000 defraying the cost of the
replacement 6`h wheeler from $15,000 to $10,000.
