RE: St. Joseeph Food Coooperative Backgrounnd: Over the ppast several months EDAA staff has had on-going discussionn/meetings wwith several perrsons involvedd in an effort to establish aa local food ccooperative.AA group of loccal community members hhave united to develop Articles of Organizationn for the food cooperativee. Our guest aat the EDA mmeeting is Mr. Brent Tschakkert, Organizaation President. Mr. Tschakkert would likke to provide background information to the EDA oon the effort to establish a food cooperaative. Initial informmation regardding the efforrt is attachedd. The food ccooperative concept will reely primarily onn locally-prodduced food ssources and potentially aa retail outlet in the Central BusinessDDistrict. As such appears too be a good ffit for the commmunity in thaat dollars speent locally fromm local sourcces would reemain within the community thereby amplifying the economic immpact of the venture. In addition, if thee cooperative facilitated intterest in farm to school initiaatives (Kenneedy Communnity School, CCSB, SJU) loccal processorrs of food itemms could also benefit. Otheer spin-off effeects could incclude enhanced retail oppoortunities withhin the downtowwn and healthhy food choicces which couuld benefit pubblic health. Mr. Tscharrkert is requeesting consideration from the EDA of participating in a feasibillity study for aa food coopeerative. The feasibility sttudy is estimmated to cosst $10,000. MMr. Tschakert is requesting considerationn of a $500 too $1,000 grantt to complete the study. The EDA hhas an adequuate amount wwithin the EDDA Programs line item (CIP) to meet the request. The Board may wish to cconsider the ffollowing: 1. Reimbursementt/participation in payment oof an invoice vvs. up-front donation. 2. Whho will functioon as the fisccal agent sinnce the articlees of organizzation have nnot beeen filed for thee food cooperrative. Action: Mr. Tschakkert will explain backgroundd information regarding thee cooperativee.
