JOSEPH Council Agenda Item 4(e) MEETING DATE: September 2, 2010 AGENDA ITEM Laptop Replacement — Requested Action: Authorize the replacement purchase of two mobile laptops at a cost of $ 8,277.52 SUBMITTED BY: Police Department BOARD /COMMISSION /COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The City has previously purchased mobile laptops for all four of the police vehicles. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The police department currently has four (4) lap top computers that are used in the patrol cars. These computers are linked to the county records system and the state records system. Officers receive calls for service and data on the calls. Officers are also able to run license checks with the state. The current computers were purchased in March of 2006. These computers are starting to break down and repairs are very costly. I had hoped to get 6 to 7 years on the computers but I think this was unrealistic. Currently the county is changing their lap tops out every three years. I would propose that we look at every 4 years. This would assist us in keeping up with changing software and normal updates. I would propose that we replace two this year on two next year. One of the current computers has screen issues that will need to be repaired if it is not replaced. Since the City has included in the budget the 8 officer, the funds not expended for that position could be used. Those funds have not been reallocated and the budget has approximately $ 75,000. We had hoped to wait until next year to replace computers, but the wear is starting to have a maintenance costs. The computers next year will be purchased through the CIP. It is also not the intent to bring back further items to purchase from the budgeted position.
