A nature trail (approximately X mile in length) will be constructed with posted signs identifying the various grasses, flowers, birds, and insects that can be found in the prairie. All students in grades K -S will participate in the development and maintenance of the native habitat on the site and learn extensively about native prairies. This initiative will help the school provide experiential learning and meet its goal of making the school an environmental teaching tool for the entire community. The benefits on native prairie environments such as: 1)Improve water quality, 2) Anchor soil, 3) Provide wildlife habitat, and 4) Sequester carbon will all be conveyed. Kennedy Community School was one of nearly 50 nationwide schools which submitted a Green Schools Program application for the 2011 spring semester, and was one of just 15 schools which had the grant application approved! Kennedy Community School becomes just the 2nd Minnesota school to apply and receive a grant in this nationwide program. The program allows point donations to be made by home recyclers, toward approved environmental - themed projects the applicant schools desire assistance to deploy. This means that all St. Joseph residents will soon have the opportunity to donate their Recyclebank points to this fine cause. A 100 point donation is the equivalent of a $10.00 donation to the program. Donations are aggregated through the spring with Recyclebank mailing Kennedy Community School a check, up to the maximum grant awarded, sometime in April this year. I am forwarding to Ms. Weyrens a website link to our website for a more detailed explanation of the Green Schools Program. This may increase already- strong community awareness and involvement. Kennedy also mentioned they intend to work with your local Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Fish' and Wildlife Service to better education and awareness. We applaud the Kennedy Community School and the City of St. Joseph's proactive approach to bettering the environment. Thanks to you offering incentives for residents to recycle more with Allied Waste, all St. Joseph residents, and now specifically K -8 school children, are finding rewards and added benefits for helping the environment. Please contact me anytime I can be of assistance.
