FIRE DEPT.
MEETING DATE: August 10th, 2011
AGENDA ITEM: Fire Chiefs Report
Fire Board Agenda Item 4
The last three new members are still on track for getting their minimum requirements done.
Mike Schmotzer and Brent Johnson did pass and are know State Certified in FF1. We are
working with all three of them to get their Class B License with Tanker endorsement. All
three started July 13th, 2010.
• At our last Fire Board Meeting, I informed you that Amanda Cherne has been on medical
leave due to a back injury at her job with Gold Cross, she has lifting restrictions of 40lbs.
Before she was out on leave and after, myself and a few other members have tried to help
her get in to get her license done. She received a letter back in May stating that even though
she is on Medical Leave, she will be suspended from the St. Joseph Fire Department until she
has her license and is cleared of her medical problem. After receiving the letter, she was able
to pass her written test and is scheduled to take the behind the wheel on Monday August
8th.
• Waiting to here from Terry from the Public Works about when the Seal Coating will take place
on the Fire Halls parking lot.
• Units 1, 2, & 3 were in for their yearly DOT inspection, per our insurance, with Unit 1 being
the only one that did not pass. It had a cracked rear brake drum that was fixed that day.
They are also scheduled for their annual pump and ladder testing the week of August 8th -
12th
• Whether it was because of the State Shut Down or not, the FEMA grant has yet to open up
this year. The board approved to write a grant for new Turnout Gear at our last meeting. I
told them that are gear is suppose to be replaced every 10 years and that if we do not get the
grant we may have to start to look at replacing gear next year in steps because most of our
gear is past the 10 year mark.
• The DNR grant that the board approved us to write for at our last meeting to help offset the
cost of replacing or six -wheel atv used for grass /brush fires has not come through yet.
According to the DNR, the State Shut Down did affect this and either way we will be notified if
we received the grant or not.
