HomeMy WebLinkAbout[05c] Update of SCDP Grant ApplicationDATE: August 17, 2011 Action: Discussion /direction kindly requested. MEMO TO: Economic Development Authority Administrator Judy Weyrens FROM: Cynthia Smith - Strack Municipal Development Group Mayor RE: Small Cities Development Program Application Update Rick Schultz Councilors Background: Steve Frank I'm pleased to inform you that I've met with Jim Anderson and Bob Swanberg from the Stearns Bob Loso County HRA twice in the past few weeks regarding an application for the Small Cities Renee Symanietz Development Grant Program (SCDP). I'm also pleased to inform you that Bob Swanberg has Dale Wick offered to cover all costs associated with an application to the SCDP. EDA Additional detail on the SCDP is attached to this memo. The application would be a joint project Carolyn Yaggie- with the City of Albany (required to be competitive). Albany would seek approximately $300,000 Heinen in commercial rehabilitation, our portion of the same amount would be used for rental Chad Davey rehabilitation and /or owner occupied rehabilitation. Eligible costs include reroofing, new siding, Al Rassier new windows, new furnace and code correction items. In order to qualify we need to provide Tom Skahen letters of interest from the public. The HRA has indicated we need at least twice as many letters Dale Wick of interest as projects we are contemplating. To those ends, Stearns HRA will host a meeting on September 21st at the Fire Hall. From 6 to 6:30 they will talk with home OWNERS regarding potential interest in small cities rehabilitation funds to assist with residing, new windows, reroofing, new furnace, etc. From 6:30 to 7 they will talk with RENTAL property owners regarding the same. The presentations by Stearns HRA will focus on the basics of the program (information) and then request persons interested in the program sign a form stating their interest, the form is non - binding. In the interim our task is to get the word out to as many persons as possible. This is an excellent opportunity for the City and a definitive boost to development activity (can employ local contractors, prevailing wages don't apply to non - commercial projects).
