mavom Fire Safety Tips
♦ Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
♦ Store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet.
♦ Space heaters need space. Keep them at least three feet
away from things that can burn, such as curtains or stacks of
newspaper. Always turn off heaters when leaving the room or going
to bed.
♦ Have a service person inspect chimneys, fireplaces, wood &
coal stoves and central furnaces once a year. Have them cleaned
when necessary.
♦ Only light candles when an adult is in the room. Do not allow
children to keep candies or incense in their rooms.
♦ Blow out candles when adults leave the room.
♦ Make a fire escape plan for your family. Find two exits out of
every room. Pick a meeting place outside. Practice makes perfect —
hold a family fire drill at least twice each year.
♦ Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. There are
two kinds of smoke alarms — photoelectric and ionization. If possible
get some of each kind or buy "combination" smoke alarms that
have both types of sensors.
♦ Put them inside or near every bedroom. Test them monthly to
make sure they work. Put in new batteries once a year.
♦ Teach each every family member to "Stop, Drop, Roll and Cool"
If clothes catch fire by dropping immediately to the ground, crossing
hands over your chest and rolling over and over or back and forth to
put out the flames. Cool the burned area with cool water and seek
medical attention for serious burns.

REROOF, RESIDE, REPLACE WINDOWS, UPDATE HVAC
Are you a residential property owner needing to reroof, reside,
replace windows, or update plumbing or heating? If so, the
Stearns County HRA invites you to attend a meeting on
WED, SEPT 21ST BEGINNING AT 6 PM
AT THE ST. JOSEPH COMMUNITY FIRE HALL
The Stearns County HRA, on behalf of the St. Joseph EDA, will
present information to homeowners from 6PM to 6:30 PM and
rental property owners from 6:30 PM to 7 PM. The Stearns
County HRA is willing to apply for up to $300,00 in GRANT funds
for owner occupied and /or rental rehabilitation projects.
This is the only informational meeting proposed to be held prior
to determining whether or not enough residential property
owners are interested to apply for GRANT funds. If not enough
interest is shown the $300,000 in GRANT dollars will go to a
different community.
The presentation by the HRA will focus on the basics of the
program and provide those interested in program participation
an opportunity to sign a non - binding form stating their interest.
This is a rare opportunity to gain access to grant funds and
improve the condition of our housing stock. If you are interested
in the program but unable to attend, please contact the City
Offices for additional information.
A GUIDE FOR GREENER SHOPPING
Before you head to the store, try to familiarize yourself with the most
common environmental terms and certifications; and think about ways
you might be able to make more efficient purchases. Just a little bit of
know -how will help you sift through products and guide you to making
greener purchases. Here area few words, labels, and ideas, so you can
be a confident green shopper — and get shopping.
The USDA ORGANIC SEAL certifies that the product contained
within the packaging is made of at least 95% organic ingredients or
materials. To be organic, a product must have been farmed without
the use any number of harmful chemicals or processes so something
organic may also be better for the environment than its non - organic
counterpart.
The FAIR TRADE CERTIFIED LABEL identifies products that meet criteria set
F, by TransFair USA, like transparency, community development, and
environmental sustainability through improved soil fertility and
limited use of potentially harmful agrochemicals, so that you can rest
assured that the product is free of genetically modified organisms
[GMOs], fanned in a way that improves soil fertility, and made with limited use
of potentially harmful agrochemicals. You can find this label most often on
coffee, tea, and chocolate bars.
Products with the ENERry 5 1 meet strict energy efficiency
guidelines set by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the
Department of Energy —any product that meets these guidelines
contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, energy usage,
and often, your bills. You can find the ENERGY STAR on a variety of products,
from washers and dryers to battery chargers; if you spot the label, you can know
that that product is a great green option.
