HomeMy WebLinkAbout[09a] Fire Board, Truck Purchase r• rrrae OF ST.JOSEPH Council Agenda Item 9(a) MEETING DATE: November 15,2012 AGENDA ITEM: Fire Board SUBMITTED BY: Administration BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: The Fire Board considered the replacement of the rescue van at the November 7 meeting and recommended the Council approve the purchase of a new chassis with a reconditioned box at a cost of$78,000. The truck is fully funded through the CIP and has$120,000 set aside for the purchase. The funds not used will be left in the CIP for future purchases. The Fire Board requested that the Fire Chief try to reduce the price below$75,000. The Fire Board also authorized the hiring process to begin in January 2013 to add two members to the department. The department currently has one open spot and one member will be retiring in December. PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Fire Board has been discussing the replacement of the van for the past couple of months and discussed purchasing new versus reconditioned and diesel versus gas. The rescue van is the most used piece of equipment and goes on virtually every call. The Board has been budgeting over the past years for the replacement and the purchase is fully funded. Based on the recommendation of the Fire Chief the Board has recommended approval of the reconditioned box with new chassis. The company will also give an allowance of$20,000 for the existing van. The Fire Chief did solicit a bid from a second company and they would provide less of a trade allowance and the vehicle would be more.
