Fire Board Agenda Item 4(c)
FIRE DEPT.
MEETING DATE: February 20th, 2013
AGENDA ITEM: Air Tanks
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Over the past 3 years,we have unsuccessfully tried to get a grant from
FEMA to update and replace our aging Air Packs and Air Tanks. We are still waiting to hear about the
grant for 2012 that we wrote for 16 new Air Packs. We currently have 14 Air Packs,of which 10 of them
do not meet the minimum requirements for NFPA. We have 43 Air Tanks. 15 of them were unable to
get certified this year because of their age, (NFPA states that Air Tanks are only good for 15 years),
which leaves the department with 28 Tanks. Of those 28 Tanks, 10 will expire in 2016, 10 in 2017,and 8
in 2022. We are still hoping to get the grant from FEMA to update all of our packs, but at the same time,
we do not have enough Air Tanks in the case of a big fire. A new Carbon Air Tank without the valve is
$700.00(we can use the valves off the old Tank),a new Carbon Tank with the valve is$941.00. A
complete New Air Pack set, which consist of the Pack,2 Air Tanks, and 1 Mask,is$5500.00.At this time,
I would like to purchase 10 new Air Tanks(without the valve) and wait to see if we get the FEMA grant.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:10 new Air Tanks without the valve @$700.00 each=$7,000.00
