At the November 20 budget meeting, the City Council passed a

motion to include funding for the 8 officer in the 2013 Budget, with an anticipated start date of July 1,
2013.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Administration advertised the posting of employment for the
position of patrol officer, with an anticipated hiring of two candidates. One candidate would fill the
ndth
position of Joel Klein who was appointed to Police Chief and the 2 position would be the 8 officer
position which has been discussed for the past couple of years. The City had eight officers until Justin
Tiffany resigned to join department in the Twin Cities. At the time of his resignation the City had feel
victim to reductions in LGA so the position has not been filled.
The employment announcement required that candidates must possess a valid Post License in an effort to
hire a seasoned candidate. The City received 19 applications for licensed officers and over 100 for
licensed eligible. The applications were rated and the top six candidates were interviewed by Chief
Jansky, Police Sergeant Dwight Pfannenstien, In-coming Police Chief Joel Klein and Administrator
Weyrens. After interviewing six candidates the committee opted to interview six more candidates. After
interviewing 12 candidates, four were presented to the personnel committee to interview along with the
filtering committee. Two candidates did rise to the top and are being presented for hire. The names will
be released at the meeting.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:
Budgeted impact of $ 37,000 to $ 40,000 + budget uniform costs.

Accept the recommendation of the Personnel Committee hiring
the top two candidates for patrol officer, starting at step one on the wage scale.
