Judy Weyren,City Administrator OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
City of St.Joseph
PO Box 668
St.Joseph, MN 56374-4576
Dear Judy,
The St. Cloud City Council was recently required to approve expenditures of $461,000 for emergency
repairs to the roof structure of the Whitney Senior Center(WSC). Fortunately, our insurance carrier will
cover costs up to the deductible of$100,000. Still, the$100,000 is a burden that was not budgeted, nor
included in any reserve fund for the WSC.
The St. Cloud area has the fastest growing senior population in Minnesota. The WSC provides valuable
services and programs for the seniors of the region. The facility helps seniors improve their quality of life
because it is their venue for fitness activities, educational programs, community gatherings,
woodworking, computer usage, meals, and much more. Our records demonstrate that up to 38%of the
WSC's participants, who use the facility and its programs, come from outside the City of St.Cloud.
The WSC is largely funded by property tax dollars. The City Council, when approving the repairs to the
roof, requested that your city be asked for a contribution to assist in paying for the repairs. We hope your
City Council will seriously consider this request for a contribution to offset our costs for this regional
facility.
We also invite you to discuss the continued funding of the operations, programs and services we provide
to all seniors. Our City administration will be inviting you and your mayor to a meeting in the near future.
We want to continue to provide outstanding programs and services to the region's seniors.
Thank you very much.
