REGIONAL SALES TAX DISCUSSION
In 2013 the area ci?es (St. Joseph, Waite Park, St. Cloud, Sar-
tell, Sauk Rapids and St. Augusta) received legisla?ve approval
to extend the addi?onal ½ cent sales tax an addi?onal 20 years
beginning in 2018, pending voter approval. The addi?onal ½
cent sales tax is a regional tax and as such a regional project(s)
must be part of the plan. The area ci?es have agreed to desig-
nate $ 900,000 annually to the following projects:
$ 500,000 Regional Trails connec?ng to the Wobegon
thereby connec?ng all six ci?es.
$ 200,000 Aqua?cs Center
$ 200,000 St. Cloud Regional Airport
Once the $ 900,000 is distributed for the regional projects, the
remaining revenue is distributed to the area ci?es using a for-
mula that combines popula?on and sales tax collec?on. Based
on the formula, the City of St. Joseph receives approximately
$ 1.42 for each $ 1.00 collected in the City.
As this ma?er will be placed on the November 4 ballot, the City
Council is looking for sugges?ons on poten?al projects for the
poten?al revenue. Based on projec?ons, it is an?cipated that
St. Joseph will collect 11 M over a 20 year period.
Input sessions will be held at City Hall on:
July 16, 2014 6:00 PM and
July 21, 2014 5:30 PM
