Council Agenda Item 4e
MEETING DATE: 12/17/2014
AGENDA ITEM: Squad Computer Grant – Requested Action: Allow Chief Klein to apply for the
grant provided by the MN Department of Traffic Safety
SUBMITTED BY: Police Department
BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION:
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The St. Joseph Police Department has been using in-squad computers
for many years to assist in their duties. The Minnesota Court System recognizes the benefit of officers
using squad computers to complete their work and wants to tap into that technology. The court system
is in the process of implementing e-citations around the state to make the process of issuing a citation
by the officer more efficient and getting those citations to the court in a more timely manner. E-citations
are done using a license card reader to input driver information into a ticket and then prints the ticket
out with an in squad printer for the officers. This is less time consuming and prevents more errors from
occurring. The MN Department of Traffic Safety has a grant available for squad computers, license card
readers and printers. The total cost of this equipment for 4 squad cars is $15,476.00. This grant could
supply us with a 50% match, reducing our cost to $7,738.00. We are budgeted to replace our 4 squad
computers in 2015. If given the chance to get this grant, we could possibly offset those costs.
Note: MN Statute requires City Council approve all grant applications.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: Reduce squad computer equipment costs by $7,738.00.
