BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION:
The Personnel Committee is
recommending hiring Eric Brutger as a Full Time Patrol Officer, replacing Peter Janssen who retired.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City accepted applications for patrol officer and received 35
applications. All applications were ranked by three different people with the scores averaged. The top 12
candidates were interviewed by a subcommittee, consisting of: Police Chief Joel Klein, Sergeant Dwight
Pfannenstein, Sartell Police Chief Jim Hughes, SJU Security Head Shawn Vierzba and the City
Administrator. The subcommittee recommended the top three candidates who were then interviewed by
the Personnel Committee (Rick and Dale) and the Police Chief, Sergeant and Administrator. It was a
unanimous decision to recommend hiring Eric Brutger as a full time officer. Eric is currently employed
by the City as a part time officer.
At the same time the Personnel Committee has recommended hiring the second candidate, Michael
Husen, as a part time officer, replacing Brutger. It is the policy of the City that when a part time officer is
hired, that person is responsible for paying the medical and psychological testing and if they stay for one
year, they are reimbursed the cost. Husen has been contacted about the part time position and staff is
waiting to see if he is interested. The part time position in St. Joseph is not one of guaranteed hours,
rather as needed to cover shifts and help with large events.
