.- To the interviewing committee:
Representing a group of individuals whether it is five, 5,000, or 50,000 is never an easy
task. Often times in this situation, the greater the number, the more diverse the opinions.
Knowing this, I believe I am a qualified candidate for the city council appointment on
account of the knowledge I can bring to the council, my willingness to serve and my
commitment to the community of St. Joseph.
Through many boards I have served on and my own personal interest I have gained a
strong knowledge of parliamentary procedure and an understanding of how various levels
of government operate. As the newly appointed council member will be entering this
position at a mid-point in the tenn, this knowledge beforehand is quite beneficial. In
addition, as a past candidate for state representative, I have a particular grasp on the
state's effect on local governments (i.e. LGA funding). It is important to note, that my
knowledge goes beyond the political aspects and into my profession. I have worked for
two different non-profits in their development office, where I am knowledgeable in the
grant making process and could assist in seeking outside funds to improve St Joseph.
Also my current career in real estate puts me on the front line to observe what other area
communities are doing on the government side.
A second reason why I would like to serve on the city council is that I am willing to do so.
It seems that in today's age people are not as willing to step up to the plate to serve. As
. we become more involved in our work and families, public service is put on the back
burner. I am passionate about representing citizens' ideas and working to make St. Joseph
an even better place to live. I see St. Joseph for what it is and more importantly what it
could be with continued strong leadership.
Thirdly, I would like to serve on the city council because I will pledge to be committed to
this job. While campaigning this summer I knocked on almost 20,000 doors to meet the
residents of this area and hear the comments and concerns. If appointed to this position, I
will give the same commitment to the residents of St. Joseph, the other members of the
council and the city staff.
