BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The US Department of Justice is soliciting grants for various
programs involving police officers. The City would have the opportunity to apply for the COPS
Community Policing Grant. This grant will pay for 75% of an entry level police officer to include: wages
and benefits for a three year period. The City is growing and additional staff could be utilized for
community outreach. The grant is being requested to add needed staff, not to seek staff because funding
may be available. It is likely that the proposed budget for 2016 will include discussion of adding the next
officer. This grant would help offset the cost and the City could ease in the budget an additional staff
person. The deadline for submitting the grant is June 19.
MN Statute requires that all grant applications be approved by the governing body.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Three Year City Cost (estimated): $ 71,520.00
Three Year Grant (estimated): $ 187,560.90
