HomeMy WebLinkAbout[08a] Change of Polling Locations Council Agenda Item 8a
MEETING DATE: May 2, 2016
AGENDA ITEM: Election—Polling Place
SUBMITTED BY: Administration
BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION:
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The City has established the following two precincts and polling
locations:
Precinct 1—All voters residing West of College Avenue. Poll location: Kennedy School
Precinct 2—AII voters residing East of College Avenue. Poll location: Fire Hall
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The staff is working on relocating both polling locations for the 2016
election. For precinct 1, the school will be undergoing construction of a revised access during the
summer and would create a large problem for the primary. In addition, due to all the security and safety
concerns they did not want to continue being a polling location. Precinct 2 is too small and we
anticipate a large election turnout.
The College has requested that we consider a polling location on campus so we looked at putting it back
in the Haehn Alumni room. The room is large enough and certainly meets the needs. The College has
offered parking lot 10 which is the closest parking lot. Walk wise, it is probably a similar distance as they
had at Kennedy. Staff also looked at Heritage Hall which is also large enough and has parking. We are
waiting to hear from the Army Reserve as they had indicated we could use the facility for elections. This
would be the preference for precinct 2.
The process for re-locating polling places is regulated by the MN Secretary of State and they must be
notified no later than May 9 of the new locations. Once the resolution is forwarded to the Stearns
County Auditor(Election Administrator)they will forward to the Secretary of State. All registered voters
will receive a mailed notice of the polling place change.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION: Authorize a resolution creating the new polling locations. (We should
have an answer from the Army by the meeting).
