MEETING DATE: May 18, 2016
AGENDA ITEM: Business, Retention and Expansion(BR& E)Program
SUBMITTED BY: Community Development Director
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: According to the University of Minnesota, research shows that up
to 86% of new jobs are created by existing businesses and keeping an existing business in a community is
usually easier than recruiting a new one. Therefore, having a BR&E Program in place is important to
stay in touch with our existing businesses. By meeting with our businesses we can hear from them and
address concerns they may have, provide resources and assistance with workforce, expansion plans, etc.,
identify and remove local barriers to growth and give them an update on what is going on in the city.
Included in your packet is a proposed BR& E schedule for 2016 with a goal of meeting with two
businesses per month. Staff will contact the business to schedule the meeting and send out an invite to
EDA members asking for one to two volunteers to attend the meeting with the city staff person.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: None
