BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION:
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: The City received notification from the City of St. Cloud that
effective January 1, 2017 they were implementing a $ 50.00 annual membership charge for anyone using
the Whitney Senior Center. The City of St. Cloud would subsidize $ 40.00 of the fee for all St. Cloud
residents and requested that the area Cities do the same.
The City Council considered the request in November at which time the City only had one or two persons
request the subsidy. In contacting the City of St. Cloud they could provide the City with a number of
residents who use the facility as they do not require sign in; however they did indicate that it would be
less than 100. At that time the Council did not take any action, waiting to see if interest evolved.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Since that time both the City of Waite Park and City of Sauk
Rapids have agreed to subsidize the membership, capping the total subsidy at $ 2,000 or the first 50
residents to apply.
Staff is in receipt of a petition signed by nine city residents.
