HomeMy WebLinkAbout[02] Public Comments - Ash Street Noise To Whom It May Concern: I am writing in response to a letter received by our neighbors on Ash Street regarding the disruptive and intolerable environment being created by the college students. I hope this meeting will help resolve the growing problem on our street and return it to the family-friendly environment in which we are investing both our time and money. I am tired of picking up trash, beer cans, and broken glass from my front yard. I am tired of the noise, the loud parties that go into the early morning, and the droves of kids walking past our windows and through our property. I have had kids stand outside our bedroom window, light up a cigarette, and urinate! I have even had a drunk kid wonder into our home in the middle of the night! I am tired of the destruction of property caused by intoxicated students walking through our streets and yards after bar close. I cannot, and will not, put in a new front lawn due to the large amount foot traffic. I would love to make many improvements to our property, but why should I bother when I know it will be destroyed the following weekend. As a parent, I cannot even let my kids walk outside barefoot in the summer because of broken glass. We literally wear shoes all year when we walk in our front yard because every weekend there is a new beer bottle smashed on our front walk way. The lack of respect for neighbors and property needs to be addressed and the student rental situation needs to be improved or halted. I have talked to several of the students and they have been trying to keep things under control, but it is just not enough. The weather is only going to get better, and that means the parties get bigger. I want my kids to be able to bike around our neighborhood without fear of being hit by a drunk speeding down the alley past our home. I want to go to sleep at night and not worry about some inebriated kid breaking into my home. I want to be able to sit out in our yard and not watch fistfights and drunk kids carrying backpacks full if booze smashing bottles on the street. I would really like to wake up and not have to worry about what part of our property was destroyed during the night. I hope this helps give you a clear picture of what goes on while the students are in town. We have been fortunate to have some great kids living next door over the years. Unfortunately, the 150+ intoxicated kids seem to find their way down Ash Street that is my main concern. I appreciate this problem being addressed and look forward to seeing some immediate resolutions. Our neighbor, Kurt, and I will be approaching the City Council on the April 3 meeting to share a few concerns. In the short two years, I have lived in my home at 103 E. Ash St. I have had a rough experience with the atmosphere created by students in our area. The noise level on certain nights as well as the property damage I have received and general disruption to my family life has become intolerable. After repeated calls to the St. Joseph Police and extensive conversations with Police Chief Joel Klein as well as Mayor Rick Schultz, we are asking for more assistance. We will be asking the City of St. Joseph with the aid of its police force to more closely monitor our neighborhood and enforce the ordinances outlining the expectation of a peaceful and fair environment. If you have anything to add with regard to good and bad experiences that you have had, please feel free to email Kurt or myself. We would love your support by providing more information when we approach the Council at the next meeting. Warm regards, Glen Werner Kurt Haakonson@gmail.com 103 E.
