AGENDA ITEM: Police Vehicle – Requested Action: Authorization to enter into a
vehicle lease for a 2018 Ford Explorer

PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION: For many years, the council has allowed the Police Department to replace
squad cars on a regular basis of 3 to 4 years per squad with mileage ranging between 75,000 to 100,000
miles. This continued practice has been able to keep maintenance costs lower, has kept squads from
being out of service due to major problems, maintained the integrity and safety of our vehicles, and has
ultimately helped in keeping the liability to the city as low as possible due to the well maintained and
newer vehicles.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Police Department is scheduled to replace squad unit 704, which is
a 2014 Ford Explorer, police package. The Police Department is requesting permission to replace this
vehicle with a 2018 Ford Police Interceptor Utility with all-wheel drive. The Ford utility vehicles have
continued to work very well for our department. We currently lease unit 704 from the State of
Minnesota and I would like to continue that with the new squad. By continuing to lease, we have been
able to budget more efficiently, keeping a steady cost. The lease has already been budgeted for and the
quote received from the State of Minnesota for the monthly lease is $622.64 for a four year/85,000 mile
lease. Again the benefits of the lease are all maintenance and repair costs are included in the lease price.
The only items not covered in the lease are insurance, fuel, and tires. The cost for switchover has been
budgeted also and should cover any expenses incurred.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: Vehicle cost: $622.64/month (Budgeted)
Equipment replacement: No major equipment expected
