HomeMy WebLinkAbout[07b] 2017 Public Works Public Works Department The Public Works Department consists of eight full time employees who include the Public Works Director, Lead Worker, Two Utility operators and four Maintenance workers. The Public Works Department is one of the most diversified departments in the City in terms of different services provided to the residents and businesses. The functional responsibilities of the PW’s department include assisting the long and short term planning and construction of the City’s infrastructure; managing the City’s environmental programs, operations and maintenance of the City’s Water treatment plants, distribution systems, waste water collection system, storm water system, streets, parks, buildings, equipment, animal control and City responsible street lights. General City Statistics  Current population – 6,739  Square miles in City - 3.89  Miles of maintained streets - 37  Acres of parks maintained - 77.8 2017 Projects The purchase of the old Kennedy School required more maintenance. Staff dealt with door issues to plumbing issues and increased mowing with the 15 acres that came with the purchase. There were several private and public projects that occurred in 2017.  Country Manor – public streets and private streets th  Fortitude Senior Housing \[Serenity on 7\] – Private Street  Jasmine Ln – Public Streets – should be completed in 2017  Graceview 4 & 5 – Public Streets – should be completed in 2017  CSB Athletic complex – Private – completion 2018  Alley project  Millstream Pavilion  Field St. construction  MN St E - repaving by the County/Man Hole Gate Valve repairs completed with project.  Dog Park construction  Replacing the Fire Department parking lot These projects required assistance from PW’s for utilities work and inspections. Streets and Parks  Throughout 2017 staff worked on maintaining the streets, whether it was snow removal, street sweeping or pot hole patching. Staff also maintains all the equipment required to perform maintenance in the City. This includes mandatory DOT inspections on vehicles.  Due to the large amount of park land and turf around all City buildings a considerable amount of time is spent on mowing and maintaining plantings. The City acquired an extra 15 acres with the purchase of the old Kennedy School in 2016. Field Street has added approximately 4 acres of turf maintenance in 2017. Building Maintenance  Staff maintains 18 different buildings in the City with a wide range of size and age from the 1940’s to 2017.  Staff cleans the SJGC once per week and after heavy usage as needed. Park Improvements  Klinefelter Park was re-seeded with prairie flowers and grasses in 2016. As the years progress the City will see more mature growth on the seeded areas. More Dying trees will be removed from Klinefelter Park in 2018.  Millstream Park pavilion has been replaced with a new pavilion  Building of the Dog Park in Millstream Park moved forward in 2017. The dog park has been well received by the public and is used daily weather permitting.  Bleacher roofs were removed at the softball fields due to safety issues. Street Improvements  The alley project in the business district has been completed. The second lift will be installed on the north block in 2018  Striping was completed on College North and MN St West.  The City Council authorized crack seal and seal coating in the City for 2017. Fog seal has been added to the seal coating with good success. Storm Sewer System  The public works staff has maintained the storm sewer system and ponds. Staff had several repairs in 2017 on the storm water system. Pond burning is a yearly event weather permitting.  Staff repaired a failed storm sewer in Millstream Park in the ball field.  Staff repaired approximately 6 failed catch basins in the City.  Repaired the inlet on the pond behind the strip mall.  The Fire Dept. assisted the City in burning ponds off.  Brush and noxious weeds were cleared from ponds Water System Yearly Summary  Total well water pumped – 158,797,600  Average daily flow – 435,061  Lowest pumping day – 312,000  Highest pumping day – 1,114,500  Miles of water main – 33.65  2017 total daily flow approximately 17,221,200 higher than 2016  33.78 miles of water main  346 fire hydrants  The SCADA system has been upgraded th  Water break at 7 Ave SE and Able St. Sanitary sewer yearly summary  St. Augusta sanitary sewer lines were jetted by staff  Approximately 40,000 feet of sanitary sewer lines were jetted in St. Joseph  Total wastewater pumped to St. Cloud – 135,706,069  Clay sanitary sewer pipe 3.6 miles  Approximate number of manholes - 685  Approximate miles of sanitary sewer pipe – 30.2 miles Street Lights summary  Staff maintain approximately 114 decorative street lights  Staff maintains the city parking lot lights  Staff maintains signal lights and security lights in the intersections on Co 75  Staff is in process of switching 100 watt HPS bulbs to 24watt LED lights on decorative poles  Staff has started to look into LED lights at the intersections on Co. 75 to reduce maintenance cost.
