BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The St.Joseph American Legion has requested the City
proclaim November 11,2018 as American Legion Centennial Day. The proclamation has been provided
by the Legion.

AMERICAN LEGION CENTENNIAL DAY
November 11,2018
WHEREAS,the Mayor St.Joseph,Rick Schultz,recognized and praised the veterans service organization,the
largest in the nation,which is celebrating its 100th anniversary through Veterans Day,2019; and
WHEREAS,the American Legion has built a legacy of dedicated service to veterans,the military families and
communities since its founding in March 1919; and
WHEREAS,Mayor Schultz also hailed the Legion Family's legacy of community volunteerism and the
organization's significant national role in everything from development of the U.S. Flag Code,passage of the
GI Bill and acceptance of Agent Orange exposure as cause for adverse health effects among Veterans of the
Vietnam War,to support for our nation's troops in the Global War on Terrorism;and
WHEREAS,The St.Joseph American Legion Post Charter 328 was organized as the American Legion was
chartered by Congress in 1919 living the Legion's commitment to service; and
WHEREAS,their support of community programs,readiness to assist in national disasters,and call to honor
and remember those who came before is unparalleled. All the members have proudly served and their service
to country and family and support for others have left a legacy that will not be forgotten;and
WHEREAS,I join the citizens of St.Joseph as we all look forward to the Legion Family as they chart a
course for their second century of service; and
WHEREAS,Brad Phillip,Commander of Post 328 and all of its members expressed their gratitude for the
proclamation: We are very grateful to Mayor Rick Schultz and the City Council for their efforts in establishing
November 11, 2018 as "American Legion Centennial Day"; and
WHEREAS,with a current membership of 2.2 million wartime veterans,the American Legion was founded in
1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security,veteran's affairs,and Americanism and youth programs;
and
WHEREAS,Legionnaires work for the betterment of the communities through more than 13,000 posts across
the nation and around the world;and
WHEREAS,the St.Joseph Post is named after John Kueblebeck,the first St.Joseph soldier killed in action
serving in France during WWI. He is buried on foreign soil in the Romange,France in the Meuse-Argonne
American Cemetery.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOVLED:
November 11, 2018 is hereby declared American Legion Centennial Day
