PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: The EDA has supported replacing and adding brackets for the hanging
flowers since the inception of the project.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The St. Joseph Action Group began selling flower baskets a
few years back to add beauty to the downtown area. Over the years, the baskets have expanded in
numbers along Minnesota Street, College Avenue and Field Street. The baskets are adopted by
community members (businesses and families). City staff water the baskets and hang them with brackets
maintained by the City. The EDA has used the business development/downtown budget to fund the
brackets each of the years the flowers have been up.
The older brackets are starting to show a lot of wear and tear. About 30 brackets need to be replaced to
avoid breaking loose with the flower pot dropping on a person walking by. The cost to replace the
brackets is estimated to be $1,120. Last year the EDA supported 12 new brackets and replacing 12. The
St. Joseph Action Group is asking for the EDA to replace the 30 older brackets to help keep the flower
project going.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT: $1,120
