HomeMy WebLinkAbout11.01.24 Nov/Dec 2024 The End of an Era… This year, I will have completed 14 years, seven terms, as your Mayor and I’m just as excited and committed now as I was back in 2011 when I first took office. It has truly been a privilege to have served the residents of St. Joseph. What will I do in retirement you ask? I’m looking forward to spending more time traveling and enjoying a simpler life. I will look in the mirror of my mayoral career as complex, demanding, inspiring and gratifying. After winning the 2010 mayoral election, I found myself in a position where the learning curve was nearly vertical. There were/are no mayor manuals. I was “drinking from a firehose”. That first year was one to remember. Each month was more fascinating, challenging and rewarding than the one before. Tammy and I had lived in St. Joseph for 25 years and had always thought it was the finest community in the country. Now I was given the opportunity to find out why and made the most of it. In past articles, I have pointed out all the things that make our community so unique, but I now know the true common thread; it is the people. The department heads, the City Council, the senior staff, the employees and most of all the residents. People who love living in a city that feels like a small-town oasis near a big city metropolitan area. Citizens that love their parks, respect their history, enjoy the conveniences of a central location, great shopping, wonderful businesses, and world-class educational opportunities. During my small but wonderful tenure as mayor, I had the pleasure to have worked alongside 11 different councilors, 2 public works directors, 3 chiefs of police, 5 city administrators, 3 ISD 742 superintendents, 7 different college presidents, so many fine board members. Personally, I find myself at the end of the most rewarding period of my life. I have a deeper love for our city than ever before and an appreciation for all those that I have met along the way. I have a renewed respect for elected public officials and the talents of our business community who have dedicated so much of their time to make our lives better. I appreciate the firm foundation St. Joseph has in every aspect and I have complete confidence that we will continue to be a city without equal, and one that others envy. No one could have ever convinced me being mayor would have been so much fun or fulfilling. There have been plenty of struggles, but so many more pleasurable moments. Thank you for the distinction of serving as your mayor. I am humbled and honored to have been provided the opportunity to serve the St. Joseph community for the past 14 years. It is hard to truly express my feelings of appreciation and gratitude for the relationships and friends I have made along the way--these memories will last a lifetime. Thank you all so much! The pleasure was all mine! Mayor Rick Schultz Thank you, Mayor Rick, for your years of service to the City of St. Joseph! 2024 Election Results Congratulations to Adam Scepaniak, Kelly Beniek, and Adam Schnettler. Taking responsibility in our homes, neighborhoods, and communities is of vital importance. Save water by fixing leaky faucets, running full loads of laundry or dishes, and taking shorter showers. Landscape your yard to reduce the need for watering and minimize your use of fertilizers and pesticides.
